Why Writing Down Your Goals Could Help You Achieve Them Faster
An underrated method for achieving goals is the practice of physically writing out your goals. Written goals help in the following ways:
CLARITY
Taking the time to write out your goals allows you the opportunity to focus specifically on what it is you want to achieve. The more specific your goals are, the easier it will be to define objectives and take step-by-step actions to achieving your goals.
ACCOUNTABILITY & COMMITMENT
Written goals solidify your commitment. Having your goals written in a place where you and others can see them, serves not only as a reminder, but increases your personal responsibility to attain them. When other people know your goals, they can walk alongside you on your journey by checking in on your progress and encouraging you along the way.
MOTIVATION
Having a visible reminder of your goals - whether in a journal, on a wall, in your calendar, within a project management app or on social media can serve as a motivating reminder of your end goal during challenging times. These tangible goals can also be a source of inspiration and a reminder of your "why."
TRACKING PROGRESS
Writing down your goals makes it easier to track your progress. You can make shifts and adjustments to your goals as you reflect on how far you have come and what strategies and actions may need to be adjusted along the way. Re-evaluating your goals and carving out time for reflection helps keep you continuously moving toward your goals.
VISION
Taking the time to define and write out your goals keeps your mindset future-oriented. It forces you to think long-term and see the big picture of your future aspirations. Visualizing the ways you can connect your current situation to your future dreams helps to make your goals tangible and achievable.
This year at our 2024 NTC in Orlando, we encouraged agents to physically write out their business goals for the year on our 2024 Goal Wall. Taylor Rumbo, who was as a Sales Manager at the time, wrote out his goal to reach the coveted status of Regional Manager. Less than 5 months later, Rumbo was able to achieve his goal! When asked about his methods behind his accomplishments, Rumbo replied, "Writing down my goals allows me to keep my eyes on the big picture of what I’m trying to accomplish on a daily basis. By keeping my goals in front of me and by tracking my numbers I can stay on track to achieve my goals.”
What are YOUR 2024 goals? How are you staying on track to accomplishing your dreams THIS year? Write down your goals in a visible location to serve as a constant reminder, share your goals with a friend or co-worker for accountability, and make small steps to getting closer to your goals everyday.
